Strategies for Cultivating Hope
In life, sometimes, it seems that hope will only help us reach our goals. However, it's so easy to lose sight of the goal when the journey gets tough. We hear about people who've achieved great things but lost everything in their lives because they failed to maintain a positive attitude. What can we do to cultivate hope and maintain a positive attitude?
First and foremost, we need to believe that there is something greater and bigger than us. Whether that is God, or other higher power, believing this will create a profound sense of hope. It may sound obvious for some, but if you're like many people, sometimes we overlook even the most obvious things that are right in front of our eyes. We all go through challenges, setbacks, and tragedies, which often leave us feeling hopeless. But, it is especially in these times that we need to hold on to hope. As we face personal difficulties and worldwide crises, what is coming is still unknown. It will always be unknown because we can't foresee the future; however, there are things that you as an individual can do. Instead of falling into unhealthy ways of coping, there are things you can do to help yourself stay hopeful.Â
Practicing mindfulness is one of the most powerful things we can do to help ourselves. It can be anything from praying to meditation or relaxation techniques that can help us become more self-aware. Taking a moment to pay attention to our thoughts and feelings, clearing the noise from our mind and getting closer to our inner peace, thus enhancing our relationship with God. While some Christians may argue that practicing mindfulness is unsafe and goes against God's will, there are various Bible verses that talk about calming our mind so we can focus on our loving God.Â
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
Another thing we can do to cultivate hope is expecting positive things to happen. Focusing on the positive side of things and surrounding ourselves with positive people can help us stay in that positive and hopeful mindset. We all have the capacity to be hopeful, even when the day seems lost, let the light come in, because no matter how scary a situation may be, if we listen to that quiet voice inside us saying, "stand up and keep moving forward." Find something that helps you take care of your spirit and heart because that's where hope lives.Â
Hope is contagious, and when you share it with others, hope can be spread quickly. If you know someone who is struggling, try to give them hope and encouragement. They may need to hear that you are on their side and willing to help. There are various strategies for cultivating hope, but ultimately, you decide whether you do something about it. Always remember that hope is having faith that God does have a plan for us; let that be the fuel that keeps you going.
For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. Romans 8:24-25
