Love Looks Like a Cross

Love Looks Like a Cross

I'll never forget the first time I saw a cross. I was a kid, and my grandma had one hanging on her wall. It was simple, just a piece of wood with a figure nailed to it. I didn't understand what it meant, but it looked... sad.

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is a critical moment in Christianity. It's the event that changed everything. But let's be honest, it's hard to wrap our heads around. Why would God, in the flesh, allow himself to be nailed to a cross? What kind of love looks like that?

The Weight of Sin

The Bible tells us that Jesus died for our sins (Romans 3:25, 1 John 2:2). But what does that even mean? Sin is like a weight that presses down on us, separating us from God. It's not just about doing bad things; it's about missing the mark of who we're meant to be. And that weight is crushing.

I used to think of sin as just a list of do's and don'ts. But the more I read the Bible, the more I realize it's so much deeper than that. Sin is like a disease that infects every part of us. And Jesus, in his love, took that disease on himself.

The Cross as a Symbol of Love

The cross is a symbol of God's love. It's a reminder that God loves us so much that he's willing to take our sin on himself. But it's not just a symbol; it's a historical event that changed the course of human history.

I'll be honest, I've struggled with this too. I used to read verses like "God demonstrated his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8) and feel nothing. It was like I was reading a nice sentiment, not a life-changing truth. But the more I meditate on it, the more I realize it's true.

A Love That's Hard to Understand

The love of God is hard to understand. It's not like human love, which is often conditional. God's love is unconditional, and it's not based on what we do or don't do. It's based on who he is.

Think of it like this: Imagine you're watching a movie, and the hero is about to sacrifice himself to save the world. You might feel a surge of emotion, but it's still just a movie. But what if it was real? What if someone you loved was willing to die for you? That would change everything.

A Love That Changes Everything

The crucifixion of Jesus changes everything. It means that we're not alone in our struggles. It means that God understands us in a way that no one else can. And it means that we're loved, no matter what.

It means that we can live in the reality of God's love. We can trust that he's got our backs, even when things seem dark. And we can love others in the same way, by taking on their burdens and showing them that they're not alone.

Living Out the Love of God

So how do we live out this love? We start by accepting it. We start by realizing that we're loved, no matter what. And then we start to love others in the same way.

It's not always easy. Sometimes it feels like the world is against us, and it's hard to keep going. But the cross reminds us that God is with us, even in the darkest moments. And that gives us the strength to keep going.

Here's the thing: The love of God is not just a feeling; it's a choice. We choose to trust him, even when things don't make sense. We choose to love others, even when it's hard. And we choose to live in the reality of the resurrection, knowing that death has been defeated.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16
