Doing Good to All People
Imagine walking down a bustling street, surrounded by people from all walks of life, each with their own story and struggles. It’s easy to get caught up in our own world, focusing on our own problems, our plans, and the demands of daily life, like getting the kids to school on time or dealing with the frustration of being stuck in heavy traffic. As we hurry to our destinations, we often overlook the opportunities to make a positive impact on those around us.
Because we have such busy schedules, we don’t always stop to see that there are people all around us who may need food, love, encouragement, or maybe just a kind word. We weren’t created to be selfish, and one of the characteristics of Christians is the desire to help and to be kind, so let’s find someone to be good to every day. I recall a time when a simple gesture from a stranger - a warm smile and a held door - changed the tone of my entire day, reminding me of the power of small acts of kindness.
“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
Doing an act of kindness can be anything from giving your time or an encouraging word to letting someone in front of you while you’re driving; the willingness to be inconvenienced and showing compassion is what makes a difference. For instance, offering to carry someone's heavy groceries or listening to a friend who needs someone to talk to can be a significant act of kindness. You may not see the person again, and maybe they never said thank you, but God is keeping records of every time you have gone out of your way to help someone, and for that, you will be rewarded. I've also found that writing a heartfelt letter to someone who's going through a tough time can bring them comfort and remind them they're not alone. Similarly, I've seen the impact of a home-cooked meal brought to a neighbor who's been feeling isolated, and the joy it brings to their face when they know someone is thinking of them.
There’s no need to make a big announcement and let everyone know of your good deed just so you can get credit; do something good and don’t tell anyone about it - that’s how you will get God’s blessings. As I reflect on my own experiences, I'm reminded that the most meaningful expressions of love and care are often the ones done without expectation of recognition or reward.
Listen to what people are saying around you; you may find a great amount of opportunities to show you care. Our actions are louder than our words. In the stillness of a quiet morning, as we prepare for the day ahead, let's take a moment to ask God to reveal to us the ways we can be a blessing to those around us. As we go about our daily routines, we can look for ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus, whether it's through a kind word, a helping hand, or a listening ear.
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
