Waiting on God's Timing

I'll never forget the morning I sat in my car, staring blankly at the wall of my garage, feeling utterly stuck. The silence was deafening. I had been praying for what felt like an eternity for a specific answer, a specific resolution to a situation that had been weighing on me for months. But the answer I kept getting was... silence. As I sat there, I couldn't help but think of all the times I'd faced uncertainty before, and how I'd always managed to find a way forward - even when the path ahead seemed shrouded in darkness.
A Life of Waiting
The Bible is full of stories about people who had to wait on God. Take Abraham, for example. God promised him a son, but it took 25 years for that promise to be fulfilled (, 21:1-8). Or think about Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers and spent years in prison before becoming a leader in Egypt (, 41:1-57).
But perhaps the most striking verse about waiting on God is : "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." It's a simple verse, but one that can be incredibly difficult to put into practice. I've found that it's in these moments of waiting that I'm forced to confront my own limitations and weaknesses, and to lean into God's strength and provision in ways I never thought possible.
The Problem with Waiting
I'll be honest, I've struggled with this too. When I want something, I want it now. And if God doesn't deliver, I start to wonder if He's even listening. It's like I'm stuck in a perpetual state of limbo, unsure of what's next or when I'll get the answer I'm looking for. I recall a particularly frustrating day when I found myself pacing back and forth in my living room, feeling like I was getting nowhere - until I stumbled upon a journal entry from a year prior, where I'd written down a prayer request that had since been answered in a way I never could have imagined.
But the thing is, waiting for God's timing isn't just about getting what we want when we want it. It's about developing a stronger faith, one that says, "I know You have my best interests at heart, even if I don't understand what's going on right now."
A Transformation Story
Take the story of Sarah, Abraham's wife. When God promised them a son, Sarah laughed. She was 90 years old, and the idea of having a child seemed absurd (). But God wasn't deterred. He kept His promise, and Sarah gave birth to Isaac when she was 91 ().
Sarah's perspective changed dramatically as she went from laughing at the idea of having a child to rejoicing in the miracle that God had given her. Her relationship with God deepened, allowing her to see His goodness even in uncertain times. As I reflect on Sarah's story, I'm reminded of the ways in which God has transformed my own perspective over the years - often through the smallest, most unexpected moments of beauty and wonder.
The Power of Patience
Patience is a funny thing. It's not just about waiting; it's about what happens while we're in a state of uncertainty. It's about the transformation that takes place in our hearts and minds as we learn to rely on God's sovereignty. I think of it like a garden, where the seeds of faith and trust are planted - and over time, they bloom into something beautiful and life-giving.
I remember a friend telling me once that patience is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. The more we practice it, the stronger we become. And I think that's true. When we choose to surrender to God's plan, we're exercising our ability to persevere. It's a lesson I've learned through experience - like the time I spent a month volunteering at a local soup kitchen, and saw firsthand the ways in which patience and kindness could transform a community.
A New Perspective
As I sat in my car that morning, feeling stuck and unsure of what to do next, I realized that I had a choice to make. I could let my frustration and disappointment consume me, or I could choose to surrender to God's will. It wasn't easy. There were times when I felt like giving up, like throwing in the towel and saying, "Forget it, I'm out of here." But something inside of me kept saying, "Hold on, don't lose faith." I recall a particularly tough day when I received an unexpected call from a friend, offering words of encouragement and support. It was a small reminder that God is always working, even when we can't see it.
And then, slowly but surely, things started to shift. I started to see things from a different perspective, to understand that God's ways are not our ways, and that His plan is often beyond our comprehension. It's a bit like trying to piece together a puzzle - at first, it seems impossible, but as we wait and trust, the pieces start to fall into place.
Back to the Garage
As I look back on that morning in my garage, I realize that it was a turning point for me. It was a moment when I had to choose to have faith in God's goodness, to believe that He was working everything out for my benefit. I think about the ways in which that experience has shaped me - the ways in which it's taught me to trust, to wait, and to seek God's presence in the midst of uncertainty.
And you know what? It was worth it. Because on the other side of that difficult time was a newfound sense of peace, a sense of confidence that God is always with me, guiding me through life's challenges. The silence wasn't so deafening after all. In fact, it was in that silence that I heard God's voice most clearly, whispering words of encouragement and peace. And for that, I'm grateful. As I reflect on that moment, I'm reminded of the power of waiting - not as a passive act, but as an active choice to trust, to seek, and to follow God's lead, even when the path ahead is uncertain.
