How Religion Shapes Our Perspective

In today’s modern era, the impact of religion on our worldview has become a common concern among sociologists and psychologists. This is because religious practices shape and are shaped by the culture around them, and it has also helped people understand who they are and their place in the world.

Over time, there have been many examples of how religion has helped create better societies and more stable states. The spread of fundamentalism in the Middle East and the promotion of practices such as honor killing and slavery have been two of the most glaring examples of this complex relationship. But, on the other hand, faith has been used to justify cruelty and aggression, highlighting the dual nature of its influence.

Christianity has had an indirect but significant impact on society. The early Christians considered the concept of “free will” as something that influenced the behavior of individuals. It is this “free will” that has helped shape the social norms that exist today. One’s religious conditions play an important role in deciding the appropriate conduct one needs to engage in.

For many, religion and culture are an essential part of their lives. Holidays and other traditions hold an important place. With that said, religion is not an end-all-be-all precept; it is however, a guide to their moral compass for many. I recall attending a community service event at my local church, where people from different backgrounds came together to help those in need - it was a powerful example of how faith can bring people together and inspire positive change. This experience has stayed with me, and I've seen similar events organized by other religious groups, such as a local mosque's food drive, which collected thousands of pounds of food for a nearby food bank. I also think about a friend who, inspired by their faith, has dedicated their life to helping underprivileged children, demonstrating the profound impact that faith can have on an individual's actions and priorities.

It is essential to acknowledge that while spiritual beliefs change our perspectives, the environment, experiences, and even genes play a part in shaping our attitudes towards the world. These influences affect our behavior, and our behavior determines our actions. Whether or not we belong to a religious group, faith is present in our daily lives, and it can undoubtedly affect our beliefs and actions in profound ways.

Religious or not, we'd like to think that most of us believe in the golden rule: Do to others as you would have them do to you. In other words, treat others the same way you would like to be treated.
