Faith in Dark Times

I was on a solo hike once, trekking through dense woods as the sun began to set. The trees seemed to close in around me, casting long, ominous shadows on the ground. I quickened my pace, my heart beating a bit faster with every step. Suddenly, a twig snapped beneath my foot, and I spun around, half-expecting to see... something. But I was alone. The darkness was starting to feel oppressive, like a physical presence.
A Psalm for the Dark Moments
That's when I thought of Psalm 121. I didn't have my Bible with me, but I'd memorized it years ago: "I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." () These words echoed in my mind as I walked, a gentle reminder that I wasn't alone.
The psalmist writes from a place of vulnerability. He's looking up at the mountains, searching for help—maybe even a bit desperate. But then he answers his own question: my help comes from the Lord. Not from the mountains, not from my own strength, but from the God who created all things.
The Lord, Our Maker
I love that phrase: "the Maker of heaven and earth." It's a powerful reminder of God's capability. He's not just some distant deity; he's the Creator of the universe. The mountains, the trees, the sun—he brought them all into being. And he's the one who formed me, too.
I'll be honest, I've struggled with doubt and fear in my life. There have been times when I've felt like I'm walking through those dark woods, with no clear path ahead. But Psalm 121 reminds me that I'm not alone. The Lord's presence surrounds me, and his power is available to me.
A Help That's Always Available
One of the things I love about this psalm is its emphasis on God's support. The psalmist doesn't just say that God is with him; he says that God sustains him. In verse 3, he writes: "He will not let your foot slip—he who keeps you will not slumber." God is always vigilant, always ready to help.
It's kind of amazing, really. The God of the universe, the Creator of all things, is also my guardian. He's not too busy, too distracted, or too far away to help. He's always present, always ready to lend a hand.
Watching Over Us
The psalmist repeats this idea in verse 5: "The Lord keeps you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand." God is my protector, my refuge from the challenges of life.
I think about that sometimes when I'm feeling overwhelmed. When the road gets dark, and I'm not sure which way to turn, I remind myself that I'm not on my own. The Lord's care envelops me, guiding me through the tough times.
Like the time I was driving home from a late-night shift, exhausted and struggling to stay awake. I was on a deserted highway, and the darkness seemed to press in on me from all sides. But then I remembered Psalm 121, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. I wasn't alone; God was with me, watching over me.
Or the morning I woke up to a devastating diagnosis. I was sitting in the hospital room, feeling like my world had been turned upside down. But as I read Psalm 121, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. I realized that God was with me, even in that difficult moment.
Living in the Reality of His Presence
, practically? It means that we can face the dark moments of life with confidence. We can know that we're not alone, that God's presence surrounds us, and that his power is available to us.
It also means that we can live in the reality of his care. We don't have to wait for some big, dramatic moment to experience God's support; we can experience it every day, in every moment.
A Life of Trust
Psalm 121 invites us to trust. It's an invitation to look up at the mountains, to see our limitations, and to remember that our hope rests in the Lord. It's an invitation to live a life of trust, to know that God sustains us, and to rest in his presence.
The psalmist ends with these words: "May the Lord keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore." () May that be true for us, too.
"He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber." ()
