Fearing God and His Judgment
Luke 12:4-5
I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you in hell.
Thoughts on this verse...
Most of us know God’s grace, love, and mercy, but we run into one of those verses that remind us of our sins every so often. God is indeed loving and merciful, and Jesus is proof of that. However, if we ignore his mercy and love, we are choosing to reject Jesus; we are choosing judgment. When we reject Jesus, we are also rejecting God and his grace. I've found that reflecting on this verse helps me stay grounded and focused on my faith, especially during challenging times when it's easy to lose sight of what's truly important. For example, I recall a particularly difficult period in my life when I felt overwhelmed by anxiety and uncertainty - it was then that I turned to this verse and remembered that my fear of God is what gives me the strength to persevere, and that He is always with me, guiding me through life's trials. This experience has taught me to approach my daily struggles with a sense of humility, recognizing that I am not alone and that God's guidance is always available to me, even in the smallest of moments, such as when I'm struggling to find the right words to comfort a friend in need.
The Bible tells us to fear the Lord and it also tells us to love Him, though this may seem like a contradiction, once we understand why the Bible actually means it all makes perfect sense. For instance, I recall a conversation with a friend who struggled to reconcile the idea of fearing God with the concept of a loving God - it wasn't until we explored the context of biblical fear, which is more about reverence and respect, that the pieces fell into place for them. As I reflect on this conversation, I'm reminded of the importance of approaching scripture with an open heart and mind, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our understanding and application of God's word in our lives.
We need to take the word of God seriously because he has the power to throw us in hell, and he will be the one to judge us. Fearing God is not a bad thing, it helps us stay away from committing sins, and He is also our source of strength and love that makes us perform many acts of kindness. By acknowledging and respecting God's authority, we can cultivate a deeper sense of humility and compassion in our daily lives. In fact, I've seen this play out in my own life, where a healthy fear of God has motivated me to serve others, to listen more intently, and to offer a helping hand, even when it's difficult or uncomfortable.
Heavenly Father, I thank you for your love and the sacrifice that your beloved son would die for my sins. Lord, please forgive me for the sins I’ve committed and give me the strength so I may do better each day and continue to stay strong in my faith and walk in your way. May your loving grace restore my soul. In Jesus’ name, AmenÂ
