The Serenity Prayer: Finding Peace

Understanding the Serenity Prayer

This well-known prayer is often used in sermons, Sunday school, and other groups, as it was written by an American theologian. We may all have heard the shortened version of it, which encompasses the main idea: to accept and submit to God because He is in control and has a plan for our life. It doesn’t matter how much we may want to control a situation or a person, God decides what happens and when. Accepting God is in control will help us find peace in situations we cannot control. For instance, I recall a time when I was worried about a family member's health, and I had to remind myself to let go and trust that God was working everything out for our good. Similarly, in my daily life, I've found that when I'm faced with a difficult decision, taking a moment to pray and reflect on these words helps me clarify what I can and cannot change, allowing me to focus on the things that are within my power to control. I've also seen this principle at work in my community, where a friend was struggling to come to terms with a major life change, and repeating this prayer brought them comfort and guidance.

Bring your worries and concerns to Him and he will hear you.

Full Version

God grant me the serenity

To accept the things I cannot change;

Courage to change the things I can;

And wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;

Enjoying one moment at a time;

Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

Taking, as He did, this sinful world

As it is, not as I would have it;

Trusting that He will make all things right

If I surrender to His Will;

So that I may be reasonably happy in this life

And supremely happy with Him

Forever and ever in the next.

Amen.

Shortened Version

God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change,

the courage to change the things we can,

and the wisdom to know the difference.
