Faith Over Fear: Jesus' Miracle on Water

A Miracle Born of Faith and Fear
Have you ever faced a storm in your life, feeling like the waves were crashing against you and threatening to pull you under? You're not alone. In Mark 6:45-52, we find Jesus and his disciples in a similar situation. After a long day of ministry, Jesus sends his disciples ahead of him to the other side of the lake, while he stays behind to pray. As the night wears on, a fierce storm blows in, and the disciples find themselves struggling to make progress against the wind and waves.
"Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After saying good-bye to them, he went up on a mountain to pray. When evening came, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land. The wind was against them, and the disciples were straining at the oars because the wind was against them." (Mark 6:45-48, CSB)
Jesus Walks on Water: A Display of Divine Power
As Jesus watches his disciples from the mountain, he sees their struggle and decides to join them. But he doesn't come in a conventional way. Instead, he walks out to them on the water.
"He came to them walking on the sea, and he was about to pass by them. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, ‘It’s a ghost!’ and screamed because they were terrified." (Mark 6:49-50, CSB)
The disciples are understandably frightened, seeing what appears to be a ghost walking towards them. But Jesus immediately puts them at ease.
Faith Over Fear: Jesus' Invitation to Peter
Jesus speaks to his disciples, saying, "Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid." Then, Peter, one of Jesus' closest followers, responds in a way that reveals both his faith and his fear.
"Lord, if it’s you,” Peter said to him, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. And climbing out of the boat, Peter started walking on the water and came toward Jesus." (Matthew 14:28-29, CSB)
Peter's request to walk on the water with Jesus is bold, but it's also a moment of testing. When Jesus invites Peter to join him, Peter steps out of the boat in faith. For a moment, he walks on the water, just like Jesus. But then, fear takes over.
The Turning Point: When Fear Takes Hold
As Peter looks around at the wind and the waves, he becomes afraid and starts to sink.
"But when he saw the strength of the wind, he was afraid, and when he began to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’" (Matthew 14:30, CSB)
The story of Jesus walking on the water, and Peter's brief walk on the water with him, teaches us a crucial lesson about faith and fear. When we're in the midst of a storm, it's easy to let fear take hold. But Jesus' response to Peter gives us a model for how to respond when we're afraid.
Responding to Fear with Faith
When Peter cries out to Jesus, "Lord, save me!", Jesus immediately reaches out and grabs him.
"Jesus immediately reached out his hand, caught hold of him, and said to him, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’" (Matthew 14:31, CSB)
Jesus doesn't scold Peter for being afraid; he gently rebukes him for doubting. The question, "Why did you doubt?" is a turning point. It invites Peter (and us) to reflect on why we let fear take over.
Practical Takeaways: Choosing Faith Over Fear
So, how can we apply the story of Jesus walking on the water to our lives? Here are a few practical takeaways:
- Recognize that fear is natural, but it's not what defines us. When we're in a storm, it's natural to feel afraid. But we don't have to let fear control us. We can choose to focus on Jesus and his power.
- Keep your eyes on Jesus. Peter's mistake was looking around at the wind and waves instead of keeping his eyes on Jesus. When we're in a storm, it's essential to keep our focus on Jesus and his power.
- Cry out to Jesus in faith. When Peter started to sink, he cried out to Jesus in faith. We can do the same. When we're afraid, we can cry out to Jesus, trusting that he'll respond.
A Prayer for Faith Over Fear
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come to you today, acknowledging that we often struggle with fear. Whether it's a storm in our lives or a challenge that seems insurmountable, we can feel overwhelmed. But we also know that you are with us, and that you are powerful.
Help us to keep our eyes on you, just like Peter did for a moment. Help us to trust in your power and your presence. When fear takes hold, remind us to cry out to you in faith.
Give us the courage to choose faith over fear, even when it's hard. We know that you are always with us, and that you will never leave us or forsake us.
In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.
Conclusion
The story of Jesus walking on the water is more than just a miracle; it's an invitation to trust in God's power and presence. When we're in the midst of a storm, it's easy to let fear take hold. But Jesus invites us to choose faith over fear. As we reflect on this miraculous moment, may we be encouraged to trust in Jesus, even when the waves of life crash against us. May we keep our eyes on him, and may we cry out to him in faith, trusting that he'll respond with love and power.
