Daniel's Courage Wasn't Courage At All

It's tempting to think of Daniel as a superhero of faith, a man who stared down lions and emerged unscathed. But what if his courage wasn't courage at all? What if it was simply trust?

Daniel's story is one of extraordinary faith, but it's also a story of ordinary humanity. He was a man who lived in a world that was hostile to his beliefs, a world that demanded he conform to its standards. And yet, he refused.

The World's Expectations

We're often told that we need to be brave, to stand up for what we believe in, even if it means facing opposition. But Daniel's story shows us that bravery is not the only factor at play. Daniel 6:23 - "The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted out of the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God."

This verse reveals the depth of Daniel's trust in a God who is sovereign, even in the face of overwhelming opposition.

The Lion's Den

We've all been in situations where we feel like we're facing our own lions, where the circumstances surrounding us seem daunting and unforgiving. And it's in those moments that we're tempted to rely on our own strength, our own courage. However, this approach proves fragile when we're under pressure - it cracks and breaks, leaving us feeling helpless.

I'll be honest, I've struggled with this too. There have been times when I've felt like I'm facing my own lions, and I've tried to rely on my own strength. But it's a fragile thing, and it always seems to fail me. It's only when I focus on God, when I put my confidence in His power, that I discover the strength to carry on. Like the time I was stuck in a difficult project at work, and I felt overwhelmed by the deadlines and expectations. I remember taking a walk outside, looking up at the sky, and feeling a sense of peace wash over me. It was as if God was reminding me that He was in control, and that I didn't have to carry the weight of the project on my own.

Trusting in God's Sovereignty

It's not always easy, of course. There are times when it feels like God is absent, like He's not even paying attention. Yet, in these moments, we must cling to the knowledge of His presence. As Psalm 23:4 states - "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me."

This passage serves as a powerful reminder that God is always present, even in the darkest of times. And it's this assurance that gives us the confidence to work through challenging situations with a sense of calm.

A Different Kind of Courage

So, what does it mean to have faith in God's power? It means looking to Him, even when the future is unclear. This faith enables us to take risks, to face opposition, because we're confident in God's guidance. We find a unique kind of courage, one that's rooted in God's power, rather than our own.

It's a bit like the difference between a surfer and a swimmer. A swimmer tries to impose their will on the water, to fight against the currents and the waves. But a surfer does something different. They look for the wave, they position themselves to meet it, and then they ride the wave, moving in harmony with the water.

Riding the Wave

I'm not saying it's easy, of course. There are times when the wave feels overwhelming, when it seems like it's going to crash down on us and sweep us away. In such moments, our only recourse is to turn to God, to lean into His strength. We must position ourselves to meet the challenges, and then move forward, guided by His presence. As we do, we'll find that our hearts become more steadfast, our wills more aligned with God's.

And when we do, we'll discover that our faith in God makes all the difference. As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

This reminder is a powerful encouragement to surrender our plans, our fears, and our doubts, and to simply follow Him.

A Prayer

So let's pray, shall we? God, help us to trust in Your power, even when the future is unclear. Help us to look to You, to position ourselves to meet the challenges, and then to move forward, guided by Your presence. Give us the strength to persevere, even when our surroundings seem daunting. And remind us that our faith in You is what makes all the difference. Amen.
