Building on Rock

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock." —

This verse hits hard. It's a challenge, a promise, and a warning all at once. I remember reading it for the first time, feeling like I was being called out. Was I constructing my foundation on solid ground?

The Foundation of Wisdom

The parable of the wise and foolish builders is a well-known story. Two men set out to build houses, but they make different choices about the foundation. The wise one constructs on a firm base, while the foolish one chooses unstable terrain. When the storms come, the house with a strong foundation stands firm, but the other is destroyed. It's a simple story, but it's one that gets to the heart of how we live our lives. We're all building something, whether it's a career, a family, or a community. And we're all making choices about what we're establishing. The question is, what's the basis of our decisions? Is it the latest self-help book, or is it the timeless wisdom found in Scripture? I've seen people construct their lives on the unstable ground of popularity, only to watch it all come crashing down. And I've seen others establish their lives on a foundation of faith, only to find a sense of stability and peace that they never thought possible.

The Bible says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (). This isn't a fear that paralyzes us, but a fear that inspires us to live differently. When we ground our lives in the fear of the Lord, we're establishing a foundation that can withstand any challenge. But what does that look like in practice? It means seeking guidance from Scripture, rather than relying on our own understanding. It means being willing to challenge our own assumptions and biases, and to seek counsel from others. And it means being humble enough to recognize that we don't have all the answers.

The Storms of Life

Life is full of turbulent times. We all face challenges and uncertainties that can shake us to our core. The question is, how will we respond? Will we be like the one who didn't prepare for the storms, who watched as their world was turned upside down? Or will we be like the one who prepared, who found a sense of peace and stability in the midst of chaos? Scripture reminds us, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble" (). This is a promise that we can cling to, even in the darkest moments. But it's not just a promise — it's a reality that we can experience. When we anchor our existence in a deep faith, we're not immune to life's challenges. But we are given the strength and the wisdom to handle them with courage.

I'll be honest, I've struggled with this too. There have been times when I felt like I was constructing my existence on the wrong foundation. I was seeking guidance from all the wrong places, and I was paying the price. But then I stumbled upon this verse — "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock" (). And something shifted inside of me. I realized that I had a choice to make. I could continue constructing my path on unstable ground, or I could choose a different way. I could ground my decisions in a deeper understanding of God's character.

Living in the Aftermath of Easter

The weeks after Easter are a time to live in the light of Christ's victory. It's a time to remember that death has been defeated, and that we have been given new life. But what does that mean for us, practically speaking? How do we live in the freedom of the resurrection, when the challenges of everyday life are still present? We are united with Christ in a death like his, and we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his (). This is a promise that we can cling to, even in the midst of uncertainty. We are living in the wake of an event that changed human history — the resurrection of Jesus. And that changes everything.

So, friend, what's the basis of your existence? What are you constructing your life upon? Is it a shaky base, or is it something more substantial? Is your life rooted in faith, or is it built on shifting sands? — And what will you do with that realization? Will you continue down the same path, or will you make a change? That's a question only you can answer. But I'll leave you with this — what if you started to reorient your life around a deeper faith, today?
