Overcoming Anxiety with Faith

Today more and more people are struggling with anxiety and feeling anxious. Some people have medical anxiety, but some are just dwelling on things that maybe we have no control of, raising the anxiety levels so much. For example, things we need to accomplish for the day, something that didn’t get done the night before, worrying about, and it’s ok to plan ahead; however, some things are just beyond our control, and we must learn to release the burden of those concerns. I recall a particularly chaotic morning when my own to-do list seemed insurmountable, but taking a moment to breathe and pray shifted my focus. In fact, I remember a friend who was anxious about an upcoming job interview - she was worried she wouldn't be able to answer the questions correctly, or that she wouldn't make a good impression. But as we prayed together, she began to see that her worth wasn't defined by the outcome of that interview, and that God was with her regardless. I've also found that sharing my own anxieties with a trusted friend or family member can be a powerful way to gain perspective and remind myself that I'm not alone in my struggles.

God is our strength, so we must trust that God will take care of us. He never gives us anything we cannot handle. While we thrive on being better at providing for our families and being responsible, being a good friend, often we find ourselves circling back over and over about the things we had to do and didn’t get done. When our minds fixate on unfulfilled tasks or matters outside our grasp, it does not help us any. As these thoughts consume us, the anxiety levels escalate. This can often affect the way we feel about ourselves, leading to severe depression and other types of illnesses.

But what do we do to prevent these feelings? Or what do we do when we’re feeling anxious or worried, or when we feel like we’ve failed? When we’re feeling down, sad, or feel nervous or scared, we have to remember what Peter said, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.” This Bible verse is compelling; God knows that it is inevitable for us to feel scared and anxious. Our brains are wired that way; feeling afraid is a survival mechanism; there’s no escaping that. Yet, God is compassionate, and he won’t condemn us for it.

There are many verses in the Scripture that tell us to let go of fear. God instructs us to trust in His presence and provision, rather than giving in to apprehension. He is waiting for us to acknowledge our limitations and surrender our troubles to Him, allowing Him to bring peace to our minds, spirits, and bodies.

Overcoming anxiety requires intentional effort from us. By focusing on the present moment, rather than getting caught up in fears about what's to come, we can begin to break free. We can take deliberate steps today that will shape our tomorrow, but getting bogged down in speculation about the future is unproductive. Please know that God is there for you, and He cares for you, regardless of the circumstances. Even when things seem to be unraveling, He remains steadfast, guiding us through life's challenges. For instance, I've seen this play out in my own life when I've had to make difficult decisions - instead of getting caught up in worst-case scenarios, I've tried to focus on the present and trust that God will provide the guidance I need.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. -
