Understanding God's Love
Most of us are very familiar with the Corinthians love passage. It is often used during wedding ceremonies or greeting cards. It means that we’re supposed to love one another, be more patient and kind to each other. As I reflect on this passage, I am reminded of the countless times I've fallen short of this standard, and yet, God's love remains a constant source of comfort and guidance in my life, a reminder that I can always return to when I'm feeling lost or uncertain.
Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking,
It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.
Corinthians 13:4-8
By making a small modification instead of applying it to ourselves, this passage can change the perspective of our current interpretation, it gives us a whole new meaning and a very clear picture of God’s fatherhood and how loving he is. Take a look at how this small change could potentially shift the way we pray. For instance, when I'm struggling with feelings of inadequacy or fear, I remind myself that God's love is not based on my performance, but on His character - and that thought alone brings me peace. I recall a particularly difficult season in my life when I felt overwhelmed by anxiety and self-doubt; repeating the truth that God is patient and kind helped me to calm my fears and trust in His goodness. I also think about the times when I've seen this love in action, like when a friend stood by me through a tough time, embodying the kind of love that "always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" - it's a powerful reminder that God's love is not just a feeling, but a choice that we can make every day to trust and obey Him.
God is patient, God is kind.
He does not envy, he does not boast, he is not proud.
He does not dishonor others, he is not self-seeking,
He is not easily angered, he keeps no record of wrongs.
God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
God never fails.
We all know we’re supposed to trust God but when you’re given such powerful description of the person who is asking us to trust him it just makes it a lot easier. I've found that on days when my faith feels shaky, repeating these truths about God's character helps me to stand firm, even when my emotions are wavering. As I look back on my journey, I'm reminded that trusting God is not a one-time decision, but a daily choice to surrender to His love and care. For example, I've started a daily practice of writing down things I'm grateful for, and it's amazing how this simple act of reflection can shift my focus from fear to faith, and from anxiety to trust in God's goodness.
God will never fail, he will always love us, and that promise has been a source of comfort and strength in my own life, reminding me to trust in His goodness, even when circumstances are uncertain. And when the darkness closes in, and I'm tempted to doubt, I'm brought back to the truth that God's love is the anchor that holds me fast, the rock on which I can stand, no matter what storms may rage around me.
