Reflections on 9/11: A Prayer for Peace and Healing
Dear God, today we come before you with a heavy heart as we remember the events of 9/11. Some of us today are still grieving our losses. We pray for those who lost their lives and those who lost their loved ones. We pray for the nearly 3000 lives that we lost that day. Lord, we thank you for the bravery of our first responders, please fill them with your grace and keep them in your glory. As I sit in stillness, I recall the stories of strangers becoming neighbors, of communities rallying together to support one another in the face of tragedy - a gentle reminder that even in darkness, your love and light can prevail. I am reminded of a friend who shared with me her experience of volunteering at a local food bank in the weeks that followed, where people from all walks of life came together to serve and be served, embodying the spirit of unity and compassion that defined that time. I also think of the countless acts of kindness that unfolded in the aftermath, like the spontaneous blood donations, the fundraising efforts, and the simple, yet profound, gestures of human connection - a neighbor cooking meals for another, a coworker offering a listening ear, or a stranger becoming a friend in a moment of need. May you bring peace to this world, peace to the hearts of all men and women who suffered and continue to suffer because of this tragedy. Please call us back to that place in our hearts where we did not focus on wealth, sexuality, or nationality. May we continue to heal and help each other just as we did that day. We pray in Jesusâ name, Amen.
